Welcome

What's the difference between Santa Cruz Surf School and all the other surf schools out there?

We pride ourselves in teaching the full surfing experience: when you learn with us, not only do you learn how to stand up and ride waves, you learn ocean safety, surfing etiquette and some of the ocean knowledge that is such a critical aspect of surfing.

Surfing, for most surfers, is a complete lifestyle, not just a sport that we do once-in-a-while. It's a tradition thousands of years old, passed down from generation to generation by Hawaiian kings. So welcome to the Sport of Kings!

The morning 3.0ft. low tide in the winter months, combined with large swells, is not recommended for kids or beginners with limited paddling skills, due to deeper water and waves crashing into the rocks.

Yes!!! - Wetsuits are part of the included surfing equipment! CONTACT DYLAN directly - (831) 345-8875

ALL CLASSES MEET AT OUR SHOP AT:

322 Pacific Avenue

Santa Cruz, Ca 95060

We normally begin our surf lessons about an hour before the peak of the lowest low tide, out of the two low tides per day. Normally in the spring and summer we start our classes around 6:00am because we are in what is called the SPRING TIDE CYCLE . Tides are determined by the gravatational pull of the Moon on the earths oceans and when the seasons change, so does the earth's tilt on it's axis. This is why when it's summer in the Northern Hemisphere, it's Winter in the Southern hemisphere, and vice versa. In the summer the moons position makes the best low tides happen in the early morning hours. In the fall, the angle of the Moon shifts as the seasons change and we begin to see what are called NEAP TIDES. During the months between September and March, not only do the waves get bigger and more consistant, but the best Low Tides are in the afternoon and evening.

We'll teach you how the tides affect the waves in your surf lesson, for now just know that, for fun and safety, you will want to surf the lowest tide possible if you are at a beginner thru intermediate surfing level.

Santa Cruz Surf School is the only Surf School in Santa Cruz to have our own PRIVATE indoor building. Most Surf Schools meet in a public parking lot, have to use public bathrooms..gross..and after the class, you have to leave cold and sandy .

When you take lessons with us, AFTER YOUR CLASS, WE ENCOURAGE YOU TO KEEP THE EQUIPMENT FOR AS LONG AS YOU LIKE, so you can practice what you learned in your class

We have 4/3mm wetsuits, 3mm booties, thermal guards, and for the extra cold days, 3mm gloves for your hands so you'll be covered from head to toe.

If you still have questions I am mostly available after 8:00pm P.S.T. every evening and you can reach me on my cell phone @ (831) 345-8875 so check out the class calendar and get ready to learn to surf! - DYLAN G.
